Simple fail: The Nestrest
Ideas are easy; execution is hard. Take for instance, the perfectly sound and rather intriguing concept of the Nestrest, a hanging resting place as devised by Germany-based Dedon. Although it looks like a perfect place to spend a lazy summer afternoon, it does have a few flaws that may not be immediately evident.
Granted, it’s pretty, made from organic materials and looks very relaxing indeed. But could it house two people instead of just one? It would be the perfect playspace for a couple of children – who would ruin it in five minutes flat.
A tree or otherwise appropriate structure would also be required to hang one, although I suppose you could place it on the ground if you didn’t mind the loss of effect.
The worst part, however, is that it’s not rain-proof. Which means you could only use one of these in a very stable climate where rain wouldn’t constantly seep into the bottom pillow which assumedly would take quite some time to dry up. And, if you do live in such a place, chances are you’re aware that small, enclosed spaces aren’t all that attractive when the midday sun starts beating down.
As previously mentioned, the concept is intriguing, but I’m afraid that, at least for my taste, it would be too complicated to compensate for its practical shortcomings – which paradoxically earns it a place in the Simple fail category, despite its obvious attempt to serve as a functional and aesthetical reminder of simplicity.
It’s a shame, too – corroborated by the fact that I still want one.
